The School of Navigation traces its history back to the Guangdong Provincial Chaozhou-Shantou Senior Vocational School of Merchant Shipping, established in 1945, and has a long history of educational excellence. It is one of the 25 teaching and research units at Wuhan University of Technology. The school currently has 101 faculty and staff members, including 18 professors, and a total enrollment of 1,811 students, consisting of 1,301 undergraduates and 510 postgraduates. The school comprises several teaching organizations, including the Department of Navigation Technology, the Department of Maritime Management, the Department of Navigation Engineering, an experimental center, and a crew training center. In addition, the school collaborates with the Inland Ship Navigation Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Navigation and the Journal of Transportation Enterprise Management, which are also part of its organizational framework.
The school currently offers three undergraduate programs: Navigation Technology, Maritime Management, and Navigation Engineering. Among these, the Navigation Technology and Maritime Management programs have been included in the national "Excellent Engineer" education and training program and have been selected as national-level first-class undergraduate program construction points. The school has established three secondary disciplines: Traffic Information Engineering and Control, Navigation and Information Engineering, and Green Shipping and Environmental Protection. It is authorized to confer master's and doctoral degrees and has a postdoctoral research station in the discipline of Transportation Engineering.
The school is responsible for establishing the Hubei Key Laboratory of Inland Shipping Technology and the Hubei Provincial International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Waterborne Emergency Response and Pollution Prevention. It also participates in the collaborative construction of several national key laboratories and research centers, including the State Key Laboratory of Maritime Technology and Safety, National Engineering Research Center for Water Transport Safety, International Cooperation Base for Intelligent Navigation and Maritime Safety, Innovative Platform for Intelligent Shipping in the Inland Waterway Transport Industry, National Demonstration Center for Experimental and Practical Teaching in Water and Land Transportation, National Demonstration Center for Experimental and Practical Teaching in Ship Transport, and the National Virtual Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Waterway Traffic.
