Scientific research is a fundamental function and task of higher education institutions. It is a necessary prerequisite and condition for fostering high-level innovative talents, a vital means of providing technological services to the country and industry, and promoting technological progress in the industry. It is also an important component of the university's disciplinary connotation and core competitiveness. The School of Navigation actively engages in scientific research, supporting discipline development and serving talent cultivation. Adhering to the educational direction of "focusing on the ocean, while considering both marine and inland waterways," the school emphasizes scientific research and the transformation of industry-university-research achievements. Relying on the characteristics of the transportation industry, it focuses on research directions such as transportation environment and safety assurance, intelligent navigation and navigation technology, and ship and marine pollution prevention. The school actively undertakes national key scientific and technological tasks, promotes international scientific and technological cooperation, leads technological development in the industry, and serves regional economic development, forming a distinctive and advantageous field of technological innovation.

In the past decade, the school has undertaken more than 2,000 projects, including national key research and development programs, national natural science foundation projects, technological special projects from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Hubei Provincial Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Transport technological projects, Hubei Provincial Major Technological Special Projects, maritime bureau scientific and technological projects, and horizontal projects entrusted by enterprises and institutions. The total research funding has reached nearly 900 million yuan. By 2020, over 600 academic papers have been published in domestic and international academic journals and international conferences, including more than 180 papers indexed by SCI, EI, and CPC. The school has received more than 20 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards and published over 50 textbooks and academic monographs.
